Your Questions About Web Host For Frontpage
Donald asks…
I made my website with “expression web.” I added the frontpage extensions?
at my godaddy host (in the file manager)! I did this because I wanted my forms to work that I created on my website’s pages (join mailing list…eg.) But Now, everytime my website is typed into a url, a Windows “pop-up” appears, telling the user to sign in. If they dont, Internet Explorer does not allow them into my site! I never gave anyone a sign in name! What gives? Does anyone know how to fix this? I did want to have people sign in in order to get access to certain places in my site, sometime down the line, but I wasnt decided on where right now. Someone please help. And please try to use plain english because Im fairly new to website design
Thanks, and I hope you all find what you are looking for!

You have to take out the code that makes them sign in. (That’s the problem with letting a program write your code – you don’t know what code it’s writing.)

Very general question on updating web pages?
Before I begin let me state I have no web development experience so this question is coming from a newbie. There is an org that has an existing website and what they want to do is update their website. I don’t know what happened to their web guy. At the time I’m trying to ascertain basic info such as who is hosting the website, them or an ISP.
My question for now is pretty basic. Do you update the web pages by pulling them down from the website, update the pages using a pgm like Frontpage (that is what they currently use and they are not going to change this) and then FTPing back the updated pages? What is the mechanism for pulling down and then placing back the pages? I’ve never done this but since I have a tech background they asked me plus it’s a favor. Thanks

Welcome to the site admin world.
You are on the path of constant learning for here on.
Updating the site simply is done by preparing yourself with the right tools and foresight.
Step 1:
Get yourself a ftp client or a File Trasher Protocol program.
A free source is filezilla ( https://filezilla-project.org/ ) download the “client” and install. This program allows you to transfer files on a special “lane” on th internet meant for fast file download and upload.
You need to gain the proper credentials. I say this so that when its time to gain the site files (assets) you will have a smooth process.
Gain the site ftp address. This should look like ftp.domain.com (org, net or what ever the top level domain is) they may give you a IP address which will suffice. (ie: 25.152.233.186) normal convention states that the ftp sits on a subdomain.. So if i want google ftp; the address would be ftp.google.com
this is a closed / secure area so you will need a login and password.
After this data gathering you will have soemthign that looks like this.
Ftp address: ftp.domain.com
login: user
password: password
keep this safe and unpublished.
Step 2:
create a 2 folders for your new site on your desktop
one folder for archiving ( a just in case backup)
the other folder for editing. The files you will be working on.
Now open the ftp client and create a profile for the site.
Keep the info the same if you are not sure about ( such as port number); leave it alone since any changes may defunk your connection.
After you place the address, login and pass, save and connect.
Congrats you have entered the ftp site. You’re doing great so far.
Step 3:
The naming conventions for ISS and Apache software (web server) differs so you will need to do some critical thinking.
I suggest working on your local system first.
There will be two windows in the ftp client. One side will be local (your computer) and the other side will be the host (the server)
on the local side find the folders you made
Remember you want to backup first.
For ease lets backup everything.
High light all the folders on the right side (the host) and move them to the left (local)
there are little left and right arrows in the middle that will “push” (copy) them.. Pres the arrow to the direction of your local drive
now wait..
Sometimes it takes a while; so patience.
After that is done copy all the files to your archive folder and make sure you zip up the archive copy to prevent confusion.
Note:
BE CAREFUL; all changes made to the FTP will take effect immediately. Meaning a misplaced moved or deletes will reflect on the web browser !.
Help on how to change and how to XHTML or CSS or creating website can be found online.. But it looks like you are using FrontPage and that should help you along.
When you are done making your updates move the files back on to the “web directory” ( the files that have the html or php or htm)
again changes will happen immediately
i hope this helps. If you have questions feel free to shoot me an email.

Microsoft Publisher & Frontpage Extensions incompatible?
Here’s the website in question:
www.diversifiedhumansolutions.com
I made it in MS Publisher 2007 & uploaded it via go daddy
In order to get the form to work, I need to enable “front page extensions”
I did that via go daddy’s hosting menu. Once I did that, I could not view the site in the web browser. A request for user name & password popped up.
I called go daddy and they told me that IF front page extensions are installed, then the “front page security settings” override all other security settings.
I have no clue what any of this means. What I do know is that I have to find something called “front page security settings” and change those security settings so the request for a user name and password don’t show up when someone tries to view the site.
The problem is, I can’t find this magical “front page security settings” since I am not using Microsoft Front page….I am using Microsoft Publisher.
Any way to fix this?

What it means, basically, is that you have the choice or creating crap that won’t work in Microsoft programs, or writing websites that work in a text editor.

Design my own site?
I am starting my own business online selling only one product. My website will consist of 3 simple pages, a shopping cart, and a free membership area.
I am computer literate, and have decent experience using microsoft frontpage to build web pages.
The only thing I don’t know how to do is integrate my website’s template (one with a cart and membership area) to a program like frontpage. And I am not too keen on how to put the site on my host (but I am sure they could help me with that?)
The guy I hired to do this is an @$$hole who is taking forever, and everyone else wants thousands of dollars to do it.
Would it be possible for someone like me to build the site on my own? Or would I just be wasting my time?
Any tips?

I can make you a site and you can forward your
domain to the site address.
It will be in Google as your domain.
