Maria asks…

I know Frontpage is not the latest for creating websites, but that’s what I have and…?

I called a web developer to help me with a new thing… I found a good webhost that supports frontpage extensions. They have a shopping cart that I want to hook up my website to, eventually, and that is why I called this fella. Well this web developer told me that he would have to redo my entire website and omit Frontpage and it would cost $2000 now and $2000 later on for something (I quit listening after the 1st $2000). Anyway, he further said that Frontpage sites are never found on a search, they are obsolete and he wouldn’t put his name to a Frontpage site. I reiterated that all I wanted was hooked up to this shopping cart, but he was not budging.

So, my main question to you is whether you know if Frontpage is that bad or not? Are Frontpage websites hidden from searches for some reason? Can you explain?

I’ll be willing to change if his claims hold water, but I would rather just go to a host that has templates to choose from or else spend for adobe or something of that nature. I would NEVER pay $2000 + $2000. That is ludacrous!

Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

That amount of money is just ABSURD!!!

1) Well, you can email this guy called Chris Farrell. He’s a pro web designer. I think the most he will ask you to pay will be $67, BUT, he mightn’t even ask for that much. I think you can get his email address by googling “Chris Farrell”. However, he hasn’t been active for about a year and a half, so, he might not reply back.

2) You could get the source of the page where the shopping cart is. You can then delete out the parts of the page that you don’t need and keep just the shopping cart. Just find a similar picture of the “shopping cart” and name it the same as it is in the source of the site. Paste the amount of source you need to your website. AND…you need to do the programming to change the bank account number or something.

3) You can create a PayPal account and put all the bank stuff there. They actually have a link that says “Put this on your site.” You can click that and get a ready made source to paste onto your website. ONLY PAYPAL!

Hope this helps. 🙂

Mandy asks…

What free/cheap and EASY web design software do you recommend?

My boss is passing the torch of maintaining and designing our website on to me. We already have a host/provider, so please no suggestions that I set up a site through Yahoo or Google. What I need to know is what kind of software exists that will allow me to easily create web pages for any platform. I’ve heard of Microsoft Frontpage and am considering it, but I’d also like to know what else is out there.

Also, I’m a PC person, and my boss built the original site on a Mac. Please take that into consideration. And, if you don’t mind, speak in terms that those of us who aren’t computer whizzes can understand.

Thanks so much!

admin answers:

NVU is a great program.

Frontpage is lame.
Also,
Kompozer is the upgraded version of NVU with different features.
There is also Dreamweaver, which costs money, and is not cheap.

Michael asks…

Looking for web template with forum?

I am looking to buy a web template for my website that is fairly easy for me to run and update. I would like it to have a main website with articles and links/sponsors that i will post/update a few times per week.

I also want the website to have a forum for discussion. I don’t want the forum to be the main page.

I use dreamweaver, frontpage, adobe photoshop, flash, fireworks.

I have hosting through godaddy.com and the plan i have seems to support everything including 25 sql databases, etc.

Any fairly easy solutions? Help a brotha out!

Daniel asks…

how do i build a smart web site structure on Yahoo! small business?

I have a site that will leverage both http and https, and is hosted on Yahoo! small business services. I want to avoid the message “this page contains sercure and nonsecure …” when a user visits the secure section of the site.

At first glance, I figured that I could place all of the required content into a folder under /ssl and everything would be just fine. However, that poses some serious content management issues.

So, if I want to only maintain content in one place, can I place all of it under /ssl and be just fine? If so, how do I modify the include_path to point to something like /ssl/include vs. the standard /include?

Am I missing something?

admin answers:

All your links to images, etc. Need to be secure. If you have anything that is from an http request it will throw that message. Everythign must be https://

Charles asks…

I’m trying to startup a webpage for my “Event Coordinating” Business..?

I was looking in Yahoo Small Business web hosting, but I could not figure out what plan is best for me to purchase. Just to give you a bit of imformation about my business. I’m not really interested in multiple e-mail accounts unless it’s just a perk with a reasonable package. I will have a lot of graphics because of pictures of my designs for (receptions, weddings, etc). That’s just the basics. If anyone could help me. It would be greatly appreciated.

admin answers:

I run biopharmnetwork.org. I started by buying the domain at GoDaddy [sic] because I have dealt with them for my wife’s business over 10 years. I then used the domain to set up a site on Google Sites. Google sites is free, without advertising, and you get free e-mails. You don’t have to buy your domain through Google’s affiliate – they charge more, have less domains, and from the help forums I get the impression they seem to make mistakes. Google has clear instructions how to set up your domain at GoDaddy to use their sites and e-mail, plus plenty of other documentation.

GoDaddy has good human customer service and technical support. Google doesn’t seem to have any.

I want to do more than Google will allow and while their page editor is easy to start with my group has grown to 20,000 and I found some limitations, so I paid for the lowest level of hosting at GoDaddy ($70/yr). That’s working out fine, and is probably as cheap as any non Google host without advertising. I am in the middle of transferring some content from Google to GoDaddy and will leave some on Google. Take a look at my site – as a club site it is meant to look a little home made – then check out Google Sites and GoDaddy. E-mail me with any questions. I’ll send you a phone number if you want to talk it through.

I agree with the previous answer – you need to present a professional face to your customers. To be cost effective, you will need a clear concept of your site before you talk to a developer. I would look first at GoDaddy’s development service and use that if it seems OK, to keep a single point of responsibility (as a project manager, l love single point of responsibility). I don’t think many professional developers would work on Google sites, but I believe Google has a few listed as outside resources.

If you don’t have a domain name yet, make sure you pick one that somehow conveys the essence of your business and is not too long.

Martin
martin@biopharmnetwork.org

PS: Out of curiosity, I went looking afterward for independent reviews of web hosting services. The last two links get you there. I have no experience with any of the services mentioned. M

admin answers:

Check with yahoo should of have the option at the payment screen

Thomas asks…

Deos a website built with Yahoo Site Builder work with another web host than Yahoo?

admin answers:

Well I use the same page from my geocities page on MySpace, all the web coding is exactly the same. All you need to do is save the HTML code and copy it to the new place and it should work. Preview it and you’ll need to make minor adjustments. If you don’t know HTML code, ask someone who does, but its not hard to learn. Even Yahoo teaches you on their site builder help pages.

Donna asks…

I need a good, reliable web hosting service I can use personally and recommend to others. Any ideas?

I am searching for a web hosting service that can give me reliable service, my own domain names, a series of email accounts, PHP capabilities, decent storage space, and not cost much. Does anyone know of any businesses that are particularly good and well-known?

I’m a web developer and I’m looking for a place to host my own site, as well as recommend to potential clients. Reliability, security, and price are particularly important.

admin answers:

There is a web hosting company sell package of 300G space, 3000G bandwidth, one free domain for life and allows unlimited domain with price USD5.95 per month. Their affiliate programs pays well. I recommend this web hosting company because you are web developer so you can use the big space and unlimited domain for your advantage and you also can resell your own big web space to your client. But if you just need a few web space for your new site you can actually get hosting from other company less than USD4/month. So it depends on what you really need and the budget you allocate for. Check my profile to go to my making money site homepage for that web hosting company or some guideline in choosing web hosting company.

Your Questions About Web Host Reviews

Donna asks…

Are there any websites that review / rate web hosting services?

I’m currently looking for a website to host content for personal use and I’ll eventually want to move it into a more commercial role (i.e. selling merchandise) so I’ll need good merchant tools and if possible 24/7 support. If there were one place I could browse through the various options it would make my life a lot easier. Feel free to add any info / experiences you may have had, but best answer goes to he/she who can provide a good rating service / list of web hosting services. Thanks in advance, all!

admin answers:

You can check out www.supercheapwebhostingplans.com. They offers ratings and reviews of the best cheap web host plans available.

Mark asks…

Good, reliable, safe web host?

So many reviews, don’t know which ones are legit etc etc… Just looking for a safe, reliable web host for my first online business.

admin answers:

In my professional opinion I recommend and also use HostGator and used to happily use HostMonster. Here is some information from my experiences and some pricing details.

1 Year Plan – Total Price

HostGator: $89.52
HostMonster: $83.40

2 Year Plan – Total Price

HostGator: $161.04
HostMonster: $142.80

3 Year Plan – Total Price

HostGator: $214.56
HostMonster: $214.20

HostGator: (The host I use now and highly recommend)
Is a little more expensive than the alternatives, however is this is easily made up for by their quality of service. They are also one of the few providers who support both PHP 5.2 and PHP 5.3, which has been the current version of PHP for almost a year now. PHP 5.2 supplied by other hosts is lacking too many features. Their baby plan is amazing and allows you to support as many websites as you like all with different domains. They’re big because they’re doing something right.
Http://www.hostgator25.com (25% Discount Link)
https://www.hostgator995.com ($9.95 Discount Link) <== 1c for a one month account
Coupon Codes:
PERMANENT25 = 25% off
PERMANENT995 = $9.95 off

HostMonster, Bluehost:
HostMonster is quite reputable and I used them for quite some years, however I transferred to Host Gator for PHP 5.3 support. (PHP 5.2)
https://www.hostmonsterplus.com

Justhost:
Avoid at all costs, their "Instant Setup" took 22 hours of arguing with support to get mine activated. Support technicians while they seem friendly have no power to do anything at all. (PHP 5.2)
The hosting service works ok, however it's too much of a nightmare getting anything done with support. They also try to upsell you at every turn, don't buy the extras, they're not worth and and not refundable.

GoDaddy
If you're after a nightmare and wasted money, this is the place to go. They are fine for buying domains, just never use their hosting. (Not worth thinking about)

Richard asks…

I’m trying to find a new web host, where can I move my site?

I see a lot of sites that say Unlimited in all their categories, but then warnings about how that may be a lie. My site has never been down before. I host it at doteasy on their cheepy plan, but I’m looking for a host that can offer me more space for a better bargain. I’m looking to spend the least amount a month I can. Do you really get what you pay for or is there a site out there I can feel safe transferring to? Some of the reviews scare me and seem misleading.
4.99/month or less
Thank you for all your help, but I’m trying to keep my domain and only sign up for one year…

admin answers:

Best host for little fee

John asks…

NEED help which web host for blog or small bussiness?!?

I was looking at Fat Cow or Green Geeks,
they seem to get good reviews.
Green Geeks,FatCow or Webhostingpad etc…

admin answers:

Of these two Fat Cow is a lot better.
