I have tried google pages ( now google sites) and NOT very happy with it. It would be better if I get a domain name but not at the cost of web space and bandwidth.

If they are free they are all bad and you can’t really complain about them being bad.

What’s a good web hosting site for the inexperienced?
I need to create a professional looking site for a college business club. I’ve used google sites and really like it however, I’d like to create my own web address. I looked at weebly, but weebly sites look more like blogs than websites. Any recommendations? I have no web site making experience besides fiddling around w/ google sites. Thanks!

I found a website about…a year ago, maybe 2 which gave you free hosting for your website as long as you were an active member of the forum.
You would first have to post something like 3 or 5 decent posts on the forum, then you had to send in a little description of what you want to use the site for, then they would give you the free domain.
Does anyone know what this site is called?
