Your Questions About Yahoo Web Hosting

Chris asks…
is it possible to change my domain name on Yahoo! Web Hosting?
So I had a domain name registered for an old site idea, but the idea fell through big time, so, since I’m already paying for it, I figured I might as well make it a personal site. Is there a way to change the domain name, because the current one will make no sense if I keep it… 🙂 Thanks for any help!

admin answers:
Nope Domain Name Stays Registered to that Name you can Make a New one but the domain Name your URL you cannot change if it is a URL not a Subsite if a Subsite you may be able to change it,

Before you jump into signing up with Yahoo, make sure you do some research first. Yahoo in my opinion should stick to what they do best, search engine stuff instead of hosting.
If you are having problem choosing a web hosting to use, I suggest you do the following:
1. Go to the webhost review sites such as webhostingjury, www.hostingsthatsuck.com or webhostinggeeks and list down about 3 common top hosting companies.
2. Next, for each web hosting X, do a “X sucks” search on Google. Read some complaints and see if you may encounter the same problems like them. Some of the complaints may relate to certain groups of users only such as VPS, dedicated server users or resellers. So you may not be affected if you are not from these categories.
3. Eliminate those hostings you feel uncomfortable with, and look for the best bargain hosting for your money.
You can start with Fatcow, InMotion and Webfaction as they some of the most reliable hosts out there.
To answer your questions about getting on the first page of the search result page, you need to optimize your page, which comes later after you already have a host and website. You can also pay to advertise with Google Adwords or Yahoo.

I had two sites hosted at Yahoo for about a week and a half. I had to go somewhere else because one of my scripts would not run on their set up. The thing about Yahoo is that you’re dealing with…well Yahoo. The Yahoo environment is proprietary and is not the same as other web hosts using Cpanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin.
It is designed for business owners that may not be that Web savvy. The accent is on reliability not on the most advanced features. In fact, the Yahoo set up does not support all of the PHP functions or all the Perl libraries for that matter. Dealing with the customer support at Yahoo can be extremely frustrating. I can tell you this from personal experience.
If you are concerned about being able to pay the monthly charge at Yahoo you are looking in the wrong place. My understanding is that they will freeze your account for a week or two if you miss a payment and then they will delete it. There are way too many web hosts willing to give you tons of space and bandwidth for a couple dollars a month. But, beware that the best deal in web hosting is not the cheapest price!
Getting your site listed in the search engines is really not that difficult. The best way is to not use any submission service at all. My advice is to set up some links to your site from other websites and let the search engines find you on their own. You can do this by making posts at bulletin boards or other public sites.
If you have any decent content it won’t be long before your site has bots crawling all over it. This will often give you a higher listing than if you submit a site directly to the search engine.
