Your Questions About Domain Web Host
Susan asks…
How do I go about purchasing a domain name and a web host?
I am new at web design and I was told that I need to buy a domain name and a web host to make my site “live”. I am doing this for a coffee shop. Also, is it really necessary to buy those? Any advice and information pertaining web design is welcome. Thanks

Hi Jen,
Yes, you do need to buy/purchase a domain name first. Next you need to have your domain “hosted” somewhere. This is where you will store all the computer code (like Java Scripting or HTML, etc) and pictures or whatever you like on that server. I’ve been a webmaster for a few websites for the past several years, and it’s very rewarding. I collect license plates for a hobby and thus started my own license plate collecting webpage back in 1999. There is a LOT of competition for website domain registration as well as hosting services. In many cases, you can get a “combined” package and save money by getting both. One company that I use and is very competitive is godaddy.com. Yahoo has it’s own hosting service as well.
Hope that helps and good luck to you!

If I cancel a web host plan will the domain be available to others?
I’m canceling my web host plan, how long after I cancel will the domain be available to others? Will it still last until the expiration date?
admin answers:
It depends on the nature of the “registrar” you are using. Some will “squat” on the domain name, so that after it “expires” (as in, your account expiring), you’ll have to pay a premium to get it back from them. If you’re with a “real” registrar instead of a proxy, then it will be available as soon as it expires.
One quick way to tell? If you’re paying less than $30 a year for domain name registration, then it’s probably a proxy, and you’re under the mercy of their terms of service.
